It's Only Words...

I recently shared my word for 2017 on Instagram and the response showed me something- words still have most of the power in my life, and I'm okay with that.

I didn't realise that by simply deciding on one word that I was going to touch on, whenever my determination wavered, that I was actually renewing the motivation I have within myself. I don't even think that it's important what word I picked (or what word you pick if you choose to) what's important is what the word represents, what power I give it, and that it means something to me.

By choosing that one word I gave my brain just one thing to focus on- one thing out of all the little things that go on in my life- that one word gives my brain a point to hark back to. By choosing just one word instead of a particular goal or set of goals I have given my brain the leeway it needs to calm itself, to prioritise, to maximise it's potential.

That is one word that within seconds of writing it down, my imagination started to kick into overdrive, my motivation switched a gear and my future looked exciting. More exciting than it had looked when I was too busy trying to focus on things instead of feelings. One word had the power to relax me and that is amazing.

And isn't that the point of words? To give your brain something to to zone in on, something to picture, something to work towards.

Our words have power because we give them power, but I think we give them that power because without them we'd be lost.

Sometimes all it can take is one word to make or break your day. Some words can illicit joy, whilst others can make you feel like you've been punched in the gut. A word that can bring a smile to your face may bring tears to the eyes of a friend. Words can be (and are) used to fight for what we believe in. They can be used to hurt, harm or upset-just spend a day on the internet and you'll see someone using their words to tear down another human being. But they can also be used to calm, support, and comfort. Or they can simply be used to tell a joke, a memory or a tall tale.

I think the point I'm trying to make is that our word's are everything! They make us a friend to some, and a foe to others, they make us who we are- whether we realise it or not!

So maybe in 2017 we could take a second and think about the words we choose to use. Is it possible that we could choose to be more friend and less foe, just by changing the words we use? I don't know about you guys, but I like to think we can.

This year is going to be a strange one, one of upheaval in political and sociological realms, all over the world- so now more than ever our words can be used to fight against injustice, against racism, sexism, Islamophobia, homophobia, body shaming etc...for every person out there with a penchant for choosing the offensive words- let's be a bigger, louder, more succinct group, leading the charge with words that help not hurt.

  1. I love this idea. I don't know what my word would be right now but it's certainly given me something to think about. Like the saying goes, 'the pen is mightier than the sword' and words can cut deeper than any blade! Once they are out there, you can never take them back so they should always be chosen with caution!

    1. Thank you! We're now 18 days in and I swear it's working! I have never been more focused, and I'm getting so much done, and I feel so much better in myself. I grew up believing that our words could either do so much good, or so much harm and they became my lifeline. Would love to know if you pick a word :-) Aj xx
